3 Ways to Avoid Overeating During the Holidays

The first and most important part of the holidays is the time spent with friends and family.

Allow yourself grace and enjoy the holidays with your loved ones! One day of indulgence is not going to ruin your progress. However, back to back days, or weekends, of indulgence, quickly add up and before you know it, you’ve set yourself back more than you would like.

This can easily be avoided by simply being mindful of how much you’re eating of these calorie-dense foods.

Here are just a few tips that I find personally help me avoid overeating during the holidays:
  • Remember to drink more water when you plan on having a cheat meal! Eating on a completely empty stomach can cause you to overeat. In some cases, we mistake dehydration for hunger. Staying hydrated during the holidays is a must so you can keep your appetite in check!
  • Portion control is key. Don’t deny yourself of the goodies, but just remember that typical holiday food can be calorie-dense.
  • Stay active and out of the kitchen as much as possible. I know for me when food is sitting out I’ll just sit and graze/pick all day long. So going for a walk outside after dinner with family, playing board games, etc. helps avoid the grazing and mindless snacking. Those bites here and there add up fast.
Get right back on track the next day! Even pick a big body part to lift like legs or back to put all those extra calories to good use.
Again, most importantly, enjoy the time spent with friends and family. Life is short. Memories over macros!
